J is for Jentacular

My favorite thing to drink for breakfast is half orange juice, half cranberry juice.

breakfastDan, you said this was a breakfast blog. THIS will REALLY be a breakfast post!

I had read somewhere in a list of weird words that jentacular was an adjective meaning “pertaining to breakfast.” But as I looked at other sources, it appears to mean, “Of or pertaining to a breakfast taken early in the morning, or immediately on getting up.” There’s even the word “antejentacular” meaning to eat breakfast BEFORE getting out of bed. Breakfast in bed, I imagine.

The majority of dictionaries do not include the extended definition, so I shan’t either, except to note that I usually get up before I’m hungry. I wake up when the CATS are hungry, which is around 4:30. I feed them, work on the e-mail, blog for an hour or so, and sometimes go back to bed when The Wife’s alarm goes off, usually around 5:30 during the school year.

Breakfast is often cold cereal. I have written EXTENSIVELY about cereal, so I need not get into that, except to note that the great thing about cereals, and the weird thing, is that one brand or other is often on sale, and usually have lots of coupons in the newspaper, so I seldom pay full price.

In the winter, and even in the colder days of autumn and spring, we often have oatmeal. Not only is it warming, the oats, but I also gather, are good cholesterol fighters.

The first thing I ever made on our gas stove when I was eight, give or take, was scrambled eggs, using a cast-iron skillet. Teflon non-stick pans did exist then, but we never used them. For one thing, in the early days, they were far too expensive.

On weekends, we usually have either pancakes or waffles, with whatever fruit we have available. One of our indulgences is that we like real maple syrup and use it far more often than the store-bought concoction. (I’ve expressed my mixed emotions over Log Cabin syrup.)

As I’ve mentioned a few times, my favorite thing to drink for breakfast is half orange juice, half cranberry juice. When it’s cold, I drink tea, but, and I know it’s a mortal sin, I’ve ever gotten into drinking coffee.

What do YOU like for breakfast?

Coffee and the brain. Plus What does caffeine do for us?

  1. Not a coffee drinker, but must have my hot tea with honey every morning….summer or winter! Breakfast is usually some sort of egg and yogurt. And sometimes its chocolate Cheerios! But never in bed!

  2. I have 2 of our own hen’s eggs boiled for breakfast, with 2 slices of toast cut into fingers – which we call “soldiers!” I often post photos of my eggs on Facebook I need to get out more! lol! Thanks for this Roger, always nice to learn a bit of our domestic life!

  3. I would like Denise’s breakfast and remember ‘soldiers’ fondly, – nowadays I have either cereal and fruit or vary the way my eggs are cooked, – poached, scrambled, never fried, but always with coffee….and toast from the Farmer’s Market – apricot and pepper bread.

  4. I didn’t know of this word, Roger.
    Thanks for sharing.
Yes, some days I HAVE to eat breakfast as soon as I wake up 🙂

  5. My breakfast is usually toast and apple butter with a fruit, I do fix oatmeal quite a bit too. I’m a big coffee drinker–enough said.

  6. I like muesli for breakfast! And tea of course.

Right now I have a problem, Roger. I can’t receive nor send e-mails. So I don’t know which numbers I have to visit. I can receive comments on my blog though, so will you be so kind as to send me your message on my blog please.

  7. A word I will have to start using!

In the summer I drink smoothies made of Greek yogurt, frozen fruit, and some veggie, usually a carrot. Historically I have eaten oatmeal on cold fall or winter mornings. This year as it’s gotten cold I’ve added scrambled egg whites to the oatmeal because I work out so much and I’m trying to build muscle.

However, my jentacular pre-run snack is often a slice of melon, preferably watermelon or honeydew. 🙂

  8. Well one thing I know now is that reading this has made me very hungry!
I enjoy breakfast in all it’s forms. It could be my favorite meal of the day. I like Oatmeal as much as any other breakfast like eggs, or pancakes or waffles. This morning I had a yogurt granola parfait delivered to my hotel room with a small pot of coffee. I am dependent on coffee. I, too , had never heard of the word jentacular.

  9. Your egg-making frying pan must have been well seasoned. I’m going to have to hunt for the opportunity to use “”jentacular” in conversation. Even my spell check doesn’t recognize it.

  10. What an interesting word!
I usually have cereal for breakfast Рusually hot oats, but sometimes cold cereal (Cheerios or Corn flakes) with fruit. On Saturdays we meet friends at a local caf̩ for ham and biscuits. Happy Eating!

  11. My breakfast is mostly brunch, since I’m a night owl. And very light – a Dutch wheat rusk (comparable to toast) and tea – that’s it!

  12. An interesting word. I’m very much into the jentacular and its porridge and red bush (Rooibos) tea and marmalade or honey on toast for me. I’m a whole lot later tucking into that than an early riser like you.

  13. Breakfast for me is a cup of tea and two Nature Valley breakfast bars — fruit and nut variety. Then about an hour later I have a small bowl of oatmeal. Get’s boring but food is just not that interesting to me.

  14. We never have breakfast we just can’t eat anything in the early mornings, we only have coffee. But we have an early Brunch at around 12. When we were both working it was the same, I only made breakfast for our son, usually cornflakes or croissants and a juice. He had a school break at 10 where the kids ate sandwiches or cookies. I only have breakfast when I am travelling !

  15. I’m probably not jentacular (not sure if I used the word correctly in the sentence); eat breakfast at 11.00 the earliest. Now I have a new word.
