One of those Facebook pictures has a message something like, “As I get older, I crave less for material presence and more for emotional presence.” A broad interpretation, to be sure, but pretty valid. Except for the Hess truck and a few other items, I’m not all that desperate for “stuff” this holiday season.
However, I continue to have a great need for something approximating personal reflection, the subtext of this blog. But doing it oneself is difficult. And limiting. I only tend to think about topics and questions that are within my comparative narrow purview.
That’s where YOU come in. You can ask me ANYTHING, and I will answer. Promise. And almost surely relatively soon, generally within thirty days. I’m STILL looking for the stumpers; I LIKE the stumpers.
I agree to answer your questions to the best of my ability and memory. Of course, memory is a tricky thing, self-selecting, imprecise. As always, a little obfuscation is allowed, just because I like the word obfuscation.

Consider this a Christmas/solstice/Kwanzaa/whatever present to me. And you KNOW it’s more blessed to give than to receive.
Okay, here’s one of my ponders: can the United States survive as a united entity? SHOULD it be a united entity, or would it be better off broken up so that the racist, theocratic barbarians can abuse themselves and leave the rest of us alone?
1. How do we solve the police brutality problem? To what extent is it a part of a larger problem with our society, indicating a deep and abiding devotion to punitive violence? I see police brutality as another facet of the problem that leads to our awful prisons and our enormous prison population.
2. That wasn’t very cheerful, so: prog rock. Are you a fan or not, and if so, which bands?
3. Do you have a favorite hymn?

Lots of folks often wax poetic about things we’ve lost in our more technological age, like record stores and big, high-service department stores that take up entire city blocks, but what’s something that we’ve ditched in our techno-era that makes you think, “Yeah, I’m glad we don’t do THAT anymore”?
5. I imagine by the time you answer these it’ll be after Christmas, but what’s your favorite Christmas movie? Least favorite? Favorite Christmas song? Least favorite?
What is your Favorite Christmas Song, nor devotional, but popular I.E. like “White Christmas”?
Over the years, you’ve mentioned songs and albums you loved, and you’ve shared various rankings, or, at least, lists. Do you have a personal “Top Ten” of songs, and is it static or ever-changing? Both songs and albums, by the way.
Well, I’ll ask a more pointed version of Uthaclena’s question. With all this subtle propaganda from above calling for the USA to break up, do you think that the United States will survive intact as a nation by the end of this decade? (I suspect not, and I hope I’m very wrong.)

Who is someone in your life who helped to give you confidence? How did they do it?
If you were only allowed to give one gift in your life, who would you give it to and what would it be?
What is your favorite (or top three if that works better for you) word to say aloud? (I think mine would be disputatious- there is something substantial, unusual, and intensely satisfying in enunciating it for me, but winnowing is also a fun word to say because it uses muscles that don’t tend to get as much of a workout in daily speech.)
