Now Trending: Ask Roger Anything

I have a squadron of trained monkeys, who, like the ones unleashed on typewriters of yore, might be creating Shakespeare, but more than likely…not.

You know, I no longer remember from whom I stoleappropriated the idea for Ask Roger Anything. Did it come from Jaquandor, who used to do his own iteration every February, but now also takes requests in August? I’m pretty sure Arthur the AmeriNZ swiped the idea from me. I KNOW SamuraiFrog did, and with my encouragement.

I mention this because, perhaps if you read these other bloggers, you might just think of the SAME questions to ask them and get two or three or four different answers. Economies of scale, and all that.

To remind y’all: you can ask me ANYTHING, and I will answer, reasonably soon, generally within thirty days. Last time out, I kept getting follow-ups, which, BTW, are fine, but it took a bit longer than I had anticipated.

Now, I will answer, to the best of my ability/memory, honestly, though if a little obfuscation creeps in, what I can I do? It’s not as though I write this thing every day; that would be crazy. Instead, I have a squadron of trained monkeys, who, like the ones unleashed on typewriters of yore, might be creating Shakespeare, but more than likely…not.

  1. Okay: at what point does Political Correctness become absurd? Do public facilities need to be sanitized of all things religious to insure separation of church and state? On Halloween can you only wear costumes of your own race/ethnicity/religion?

  2. That time of year again? Wow! (But then, you do it more often than I do…and due to moving, I’m probably going to use my August go-round to make good on a lot of questions I didn’t finish in February!)

    Anyway, a few queries:

    1. Are there any topics that you’re surprised don’t come up more often during your Ask Me Anything’s?

    2. I’ve heard your hometown of Binghamton described rather unfavorably at times. Do you LIKE Binghamton, or has it gone downhill?

    3. I read an article the other day about the death of the shopping mall in America. Did you ever like malls, and if so, do you mourn their passing at all?

    4. I’ve expressed dismay on my own blog and elsewhere about the dominant tropes in popular culture today being dystopian settings and a HUGE focus on anti-heroes — what I call “Awful People At Work And Play”. What are your thoughts on the tone of popular culture right now?

  3. Why did cassette tapes overtake the 8-track market?

And as long as your monkeys can fly as well as type, I’m down with it. I have nymphettes (only I can see them) create much of my poetry. They knit it inside my head, and then, when it comes out all of a piece, I convince myself it’s really mine. Kind of like GWB being born on third base but thinking he hit a triple!!

    Peace, Amy

  4. Yes, I did steal borrow the idea from you, but I do it far less regularly. Here’s a query for you: Tell us about the first time you realised that someone you knew was LGBT, like, how you came to realise that, consequences, that sort of thing. I’m thinking about someone you actually knew, though it could be someone in pop culture or whatever.

  5. At what point is an argument over for you? I know someone on Tumblr who recently engaged in victim-blaming just to end an argument. He felt bad about it, knew it was wrong, admitted it, and sincerely apologized. But some people are still invested in making him feel bad about it. At what point do you let something like that go?

  6. I don’t know if you’ve answered this one, but I’d like to know in what city/country would you live if you could live anywhere else in the world. And why. 🙂

  7. Who was your worst landlord ever? Worst apartment you ever stayed in? Best apartment and landlord?

What was your favorite job ever? What was the nicest group of people you’ve ever worked with?
