Would you Rather? Sunday Stealing

Barenaked Ladies

ratherFor this Sunday Stealing, Would you Rather?

1. Would you rather eat pizza every day or never eat pizza again?

Pizza, and pie generally, is so variable that I could have pizza daily. White broccoli today, sausage and mushrooms tomorrow. Heck, I’ll even try pineapple!

In fact, this New York Times article recommends you get a good plain pie. “You might dress a green salad and arrange it over the pie, or fry a bunch of eggs and slide them on top. You could examine your refrigerator as you might in advance of making a charcuterie board, and use what cured meats and interesting cheeses you have to adorn the sauce. Sautéed spinach on your pizza? Chinese sausage? Pickled jalapeños? Honey and red-pepper flakes? Sure. Whatever you like. “

2. Would you rather stay forever at your current age or be 10 years younger?

I could stand being my current age forever because Science will be able to fix my various ailments, if not now then in the future.

3. Would you rather have too many friends or too few?

Too many, clearly, though the word “friend” can be pretty fuzzy. I have 2000 “friends” on Facebook. A few of them who interact with me I consider friends, even if I have never met them. A LOT of them were friends in the past, and. absent some major blowout, they still matter to me.

Vlogbrothers

4. Would you rather have no taste buds or be blind?

No taste buds. Maybe then I can eat canned beets without gagging. In fact, you should watch “Sad COVID Boy Hank Green Eats Foods He Hates but Can’t Taste,” because there are things he generally hates, such as black licorice, that he likes because he can’t smell them, which, of course, is a huge part of taste.

5. Would you rather never hear music again or lose the ability to read?

Now we have a tough one. Lose the ability to read because I would listen to audiobooks. Not listening to music, OTOH, would not be a life worth living.

6. Would you rather speak “whale” or read babies’ minds?

I don’t know that anyone should want to read babies’ minds. Where is the joy and frustration of parenting in THAT?

7. Would you rather be the richest person or the smartest?

Clearly, the smartest, because I’ve ALWAYS wanted to know more stuff.

8. Would you rather create history or delete it?

People spend way too much time trying to delete history, to our collective detriment; I’m agin it. So make history, for sure.

A Picasso or a Garfunkel

9. Would you rather create a great piece of art and not get credit or get credit for a piece of art you didn’t create?

The moral choice is obvious to me. I could stand to be uncredited. I could NOT bear to take credit for something I didn’t create.

10. Would you rather age from the neck up, or from the neck down?

The neck up. There’s more below the neck that hurts.

11. Would you rather see the world but live in poverty or stay in one place and live rich?

See the world; that’s an enriching experience.

12. Would you rather become famous or powerful?

Powerful. I think being famous would kind of suck.

13. Would you rather be a creative person or a technical person?

Hmm. I’m mildly creative, more than a technical person, so creative.

14. Would you rather get a paper cut whenever you touch paper or bit your tongue whenever you eat something?

Easy. Paper cuts. I can avoid paper but not eating.

15. Would you rather wake up in the morning looking like a giraffe or a kangaroo?

Kangaroo. I’m reminded of the Randy Newman song Political Science. “We’ll save Australia. Don’t want to hurt no kangaroos.”

If Sunday Stealing it be…

A real bedroom

ifThe Sunday Stealing this week is based on the word If.

1. If you were to be granted one wish, what would it be?

The ability to sleep through the night, he wrote at 12:50 a.m., after going to bed two hours earlier.

2. If you could spend one night alone with anyone in the world who is currently alive, whom would you select?

I’m assuming other than my wife. A number of friends would qualify. If we’re talking about someone who’s a stranger to me, Richard Branson. He’s the most interesting billionaire I could think of at this hour.

3. If you could spend one night alone with anyone in history, whom would you choose?

Sojourner Truth. I’d want her to know that my college alma mater has a library named for her.

4. If you could physically transport yourself to any place in the world at this moment, where would you go?

Hawai’i, where I hope it’s less hot and humid.

5. If you could have lived through any war in history (without actually fighting in it), which would it be?

The Grenada invasion of 1983 was very short. I do think was a ruse to distract Americans from the fact that an explosion in a U.S. military installation in Lebanon had killed over 240 U.S. troops only days earlier.

6. If you could eliminate one type of insect permanently from the earth, what would you get rid of?

The mosquito.

7. If you had to eliminate any single type of animal forever, which would you choose?

Isn’t an insect also an animal? Anyway, I went to the Invasive Species Profiles List and picked the Zebra Mussel.

What DO I covet?

8. If you could have an elegant dinner alone with anyone presently alive, whether you know them or not, who would you want it to be?

I’ll go with Angela Merkel, assuming we had a translator or her English is WAY better than my English. My MIL is reading a book about her.

9. If you could alter one physical characteristic of your mate, what would it be?

She would probably say of herself to lose a little weight, but it’s really not a concern of mine except as it’s a concern of hers.

10. If you could change one thing about your childhood, what would it be?

Maybe a bigger house, with a real bedroom.

11. If you could have any room in the world become your bedroom, which room would you choose?

Any decent-sized library, where I could put my books and music.

12. If you could alter one thing about your physical appearance, what would it be?

Now I would like to lose weight.

13. If you could have stopped aging at any point in your life up to the present, how old would you wish to remain?

I was 51 when my daughter was born, so I’ll say that.

14. If you could suddenly possess an extraordinary talent in one of the arts, what would you like it to be?

Virtuoso pianist.

15. If you could have permanent possession of any single object in the world, what would you want it to be?

I don’t know. What do I covet? Hmm. I suppose some expensive piece of art or jewelry so I could sell it and do good things. Which of course violates the permanent possession part, now doesn’t it?

From every corner of the blogosphere

MTG – this means you

Another Sunday Stealing. “Here, we will steal all types of questions from every corner of the blogosphere.”

1. If you could live in a house, shaped like anything, what would it be?

I don’t know. It might be shaped like something Frank Gehry designed. On the other hand, I might get lost.

2. What do you think is in outer space?

Other civilizations. Given the sheer vastness of the universe, the idea that this little planet is the ONLY one with sentient life is rather absurd. I wonder if they’re doing any better than we are. I hope so.

3. Where is the most wonderful place you’ve ever been?

Barbados on our honeymoon. The ocean was so blue. Or maybe it’s a blowhole I saw in Baja California in the late 1980s.

4. If you were invisible for a day, what would you do?

Find proof of malfeasance by certain politicians and send the information to the proper authorities.

5. What is the worst smell in the world?

Cigarettes. I can smell them from thirty feet away.

6. If you could, what animal would you be?

A dolphin. Intelligent, yet not burdened by the human trait of overthinking.

7. What is the greatest thing ever invented?

The Internet. It’s also the worst thing.

8. What is your favorite word? Why?

Treppenwitz, because I experience it. A LOT.

Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey

9. Who is someone in history that you’d like to be friends with? Why?

Frederick Douglass, because he was an interesting guy. His trip to Ireland in the 1840s, where he recognized the oppression of more people, was enlightening.

10. If your pet could talk, what would it say?

He does talk. He caterwauls, “FEED ME!”

11. Were there dinosaurs on Noah’s ark?

Sure, why not? Assuming I take the story literally.

12. What makes you cry?

Music. It can be joyful or melancholy.

13. Have you ever played a joke on someone? What was it?

This is NOT really in my wheelhouse.

14. What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever had to do?

Tell my sisters that my mom had just died.

15. What is the most important appliance in your house?

The refrigerator is where the cottage cheese, milk, apples, and mayo are.

Unconscious Mutterings (Sunday Stealing)

no matter what

Unconscious mutteringsThe Sunday Stealing for this week is Unconscious Mutterings. “There are no right or wrong answers. Don’t limit yourself to one-word responses; just say everything that pops into your head.

“I say … and you think …?”

Hurry!: Reflectively, it irritates me because it’s usually from someone who either 1) procrastinates until it’s almost too late or 2) tries to pack too much in.
Dumb: Usually uttered by someone arrogant.
Fudge: A perfectly good alternative for a specific vulgarity.
Sturdy: One of those Soviet women from those 1984 Apple ads.
Printing: Gutenberg. A good thing, all in all.

Itch: A craving.
Creaks: Our stairs and my knees.
Paste: That gooey stuff from grade school.
Waste of time: Some usually harmless, occasionally inspirational tasks that person B is doing that annoying person A can’t imagine doing. Also, a reference to a Marshall Crenshaw song.
Let down: Heartbreak.

Cancellation: Something one does with postage stamps.
Suspect: Still innocent until proven guilty.
Fireplace: I wish ours worked.
Spring: Stravinsky.
Commute: Something I don’t have to do.

Places: “There are places I’ll remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever, not for better
Some have gone, and some remain”

1984

Fraud: Doublespeak. “To know and not to know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies, to hold simultaneously two opinions which cancelled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them, to use logic against logic, to repudiate morality while laying claim to it, to believe that democracy was impossible and that the Party was the guardian of democracy, to forget whatever it was necessary to forget, then to draw it back into memory again at the moment when it was needed, and then promptly to forget it again, and above all, to apply the same process to the process itself—that was the ultimate subtlety: consciously to induce unconsciousness, and then, once again, to become unconscious of the act of hypnosis you had just performed.”

Adoption: When it comes to new technology, I’m a late adopter.
Election: Something I participate in every time, no matter what, and despite the travails.
Moving day: I have written about it a few times. Helping others isn’t bad; I’ve done it about 70 times. For myself, moving sucks!

Stolen from Sunday Stealing

free and unexpected

stollen

Sunday Stealing had these questions. But they were stolen. (Not to be confused with stollen.) And with any luck, someone will steal it from me.

The best story your parents or grandparents tell about the good ole days.

No obvious narrative comes to mind from my parents, ESPECIALLY my father, who I don’t believe thought in terms of the ole days being all that good. It’s probably a story from my maternal grandmother, usually about building X used to have business Y. I don’t know if the stories weren’t that engaging or if I was too impatient to hear them. Probably both.

Now, my mother did tell stories, like the red wig tale, but it wasn’t historic when she first told it, but contemporaneous. The oldest story I can recall involved me singing the ad for Pamper Shampoo, when I was a toddler, about which, of course, I have no recollection.

The best things in life are…

Both free and unexpected. My wife, my daughter, and I went to an ice cream place on Memorial Day. My wife was going to talk with a couple of people about who they should hire for a position. I just wasn’t that interested in being a part of that conversation. Fortunately, I saw a friend from my church I hadn’t talked with for months. They, their Significant Other, and I had a great conversation about information access, privacy, television, and much more. It was grand.

Guano crazy

Things that drive me batty

Broken politics. For instance, Congressman Chris Jacobs, a Republican from near the mass shooting in Buffalo supported a federal assault weapons ban and a limit on high-capacity magazines. A week later, threatened with a primary and a dressing down by DJT Jr, he’s no longer running for reelection.

The Boston Globe had a piece, What drives mass shooters? Grievance, despair, and anger are more likely triggers than mental illness, experts say. Yet mental health and schools that are more fortress-like are the only things Senate Minority Leader McConnell even mentions.

To that end, I’m reminded of this segment from the Daily Show, Switzerland: So Many Guns, No Mass Shootings.

A place I’d like to live and why

Here (Albany, NY). Given the vagueries of climate change, this, or similar settings are fine.

Simply the best

The best thing I’ve ever found

I’ve found some great books and CDs at discount stores and library sales.

The best thing that happened recently is…

My wife’s retirement party. despite not knowing most of the folks, I nevertheless had a decent time.  Or the wine-and-cheese art opening at the Pine Hills branch of the Albany Public Library, with music by the Albany High School Jazz Ensemble. Or talking with a friend for nearly two hours.

I admire people who…

Are optimistic without being Pollyanna-like

What makes me special

I don’t think it’s a single thing. It’s the odd admixture that is me.

I am looking forward to…

My daughter going to college.

Things that scare me

The loss of American democracy, and all that entails.

Complaints I have

People who seem to believe the rules don’t apply to them because they are too busy or too important.

I could never live without…

Music. But you knew that.

Things that make me laugh

They tend to be situationally funny, often involving wordplay.
